Physically leaving work does not always produce immediate psychological detachment. Unfinished goals can remain mentally accessible, an idea commonly associated with the Zeigarnik Effect and supported by research showing that unfulfilled goals can produce cognitive interference (Masicampo & Baumeister, 2011). This may help explain why unresolved work repeatedly returns to mind after the workday has ended.

How to do it: If you work from home, create a five- or ten-minute transition that imitates the psychological boundary once provided by a commute. You might close the office door, change clothes, wash your face, walk around the block, or prepare a specific evening drink. Why it may help: Repeated transitions can provide contextual cues that one role has ended and another has begun. How to do it: If you find yourself thinking about work in bed, shift your attention to what you can physically feel at that moment. Spend a few seconds noticing each sensation without trying to change it.
